A origem da bandeira da Itália remonta a 1794, quando o norte da Península Itálica foi ocupado pelas tropas napoleônicas. Ali, os franceses, liderados por Napoleão Bonaparte, derrotaram os austríacos que eram os senhores da região.
Uma vez conquistada a independência, funda-se a República Cispadana, que adota um pavilhão tricolor com as cores verde, branca e vermelha. Desta maneira, o desenho escolhido foi o mesmo da então recém-proclamada República Francesa, somente com a cor verde em lugar do azul.
Como o processo de unificação da Itália começou pelo norte da península, o emblema acabou sendo eleito para representar o novo país independente. Quando o reino da Itália foi constituído, a bandeira levava o escudo da Casa Real no centro, por em cima da faixa branca. Com a proclamação da República, dito símbolo foi retirado.
O atual formato da bandeira italiana começou a ser utilizado desde 19 de junho de 1946, porém só foi oficialmente definida em 1º de janeiro de 1948.
